Dear Dr. Mash,
As you know, l was diagnosed with Hydadenitis Suppurativa seven years ago- I had excisions on my buftocks and groin done by a surgeon that was recommended to me by the dermatologist I had been seeing here in the area where I live. The dermatologist did not diagnose my condition, the surgeon did. The healing process was difficult at besl But nonetheless I recovered and over the next five years breakouts were few and far between. Until two years ago I had been relatively free of problems. Then breakouts occuned under both my arms. I went back to see the dermatologist I had seen before, and after countless prescriptions of diflerent kinds of antibiotics and topical applications rny condition remained virtually unchanged. That was until I decided to research more about HS on my own. I gave up on my local doctor (who by the way never once acknowleged my HS) because the last breakout was one of the worst I had ever had. Both underarms were riddled with abcesses. Painful to say the least. And of eourse when breakouts occur they can become large and swollen very quickly. lcalled to make an appointment to be seen as soon as possible. That was on a Monday moming. My appointment they gave me was for the next week. Enough was enough. Thankfully I found you Dr. Mash. The HS website had your name listed as a doctor receptive and knowlegeable to this condition. lwas given an appointment for the same week. On that very first visit, I knew I had found someone to help. Another round of antibiotics was prescribed to clear up my infection, and also dietary changes (gluten-free) were made. Within a week things started to clear up. Then during my follow up visit you recommended the Vaser Laser treatment. I believed in you so much when you told me this would help. You explained the facts very well. One of the sad facts about this disease is there's no cure, but there are effective treatments to keep it manageable. The other is that health insurance companies will not pay for the Vaser treatment. Luckily in my case I could afford to pay for it out of pocket. What about those countless others who suffer not being able to afford these effective treatments? On January 26,2011, I had the laser treatment completed on both underarms. This was done in the office, no longer than an hour to complete. Recovery was relatively fast. Today both areas look almost normal. I cannot thank you enough for the help you have given me. Hopefully my experience will be able to help someone else.
