Recently, Dr. Mash attended and lectured at the World Congress on Liposuction and Advances In Cosmetic Surgery in Dubai. Not only did she have the chance to present and educate, she, along with hundreds of other cosmetic surgeons, learned the latest and greatest techniques and perfecting skills. The meeting was planned in conjunction with the grand opening of the first cosmetic surgery hospital in Dubai's Healthcare City. The Dubai Healthcare City (DHCC) is one of the numerous specialized 'cities-within-a-city' in Dubai targeted at the healthcare and the pharmaceutical industries.

 

Pierre Fournier MD with Dr. Mash - Pierre Fournier MD is a pioneer in the field of modern liposuction and became a world leader in liposuction and fat transplantation, recognizing the benefits of tumescent anesthesia. He is recognized as one of the Doctors who originated the liposuction procedure. He and his work contributed greatly to teaching liposuction to surgeons throughout the world. Dr. Mash met with him while speaking in Dubai. What Is SmartLipo™?

SmartLipo™ is a new less invasive form of liposuction that uses a laser to liquefy unwanted fat on the waist, face, thighs, arms, or breasts. The laser's energy is applied directly to the fat cells, causing them to rupture and be drained away naturally by the body. SmartLipo™ utilizes a local rather than a general anesthetic. You are awake and comfortable during treatment, and can talk to Dr. Mash. Treatments with the SmartLipo™ system generally result in less swelling and bleeding as compared to traditional liposuction methods and can usually be performed in one 45-minute session. Repeat touch ups are required less often than with traditional liposuction.

During SmartLipo™, the area to be treated is infused with a saline solution containing a local anesthetic. A very small incision is then made in the skin. (The incision is so small that it will not require stitches.) A very small cannula (tube) containing the laser fiber is inserted into the fatty layers. The small laser fiber delivers energy directly to the fat cells, causing them to rupture and easily drain away.

SmartLipo™ is performed in an office setting and hospitalization is not required. The technique allows Dr. Mash to remove fat more uniformly with fewer skin irregularities and less bleeding and bruising than would be possible with traditional Liposuction.

How can I determine if I am a good candidate for SmartLipo™?

Make an appointment for a complementary consultation, at which time we will learn more about you to determine if you are a good candidate for the procedure. If you are overweight, it is possible that you will be advised continue a weight-loss program before receiving SmartLipo™; if you smoke you will be required to stop doing so for a period of time before and after the procedure. The Doctor will determine at this time if you have any other conditions which might interfere with a successful outcome.

When you are approved to receive the procedure, you will sign release forms and discuss pre-operation instructions. Dr. Mash and her team will answer any questions you may have regarding the procedure and its outcome at this time, and our Reception staff will schedule the surgery date.

What can I expect the day of my surgery?

The local anesthesia fluid infused into the fatty tissue helps to keep the area numb for 18 to 24 hours following surgery. This greatly minimizes postoperative pain. After SmartLipo™, patients are usually alert and able to function without nausea, or the "washed out" feeling associated with general anesthesia. The SmartLipo™ laser causes small blood vessels to coagulate immediately on contact, resulting in less swelling and bruising and faster healing. Most people return to work and normal activities within two days of their SmartLipo™ procedure. Compression garments are typically worn for 2 weeks after SmartLipo™ as compared to 6 weeks for traditional liposuction.

This procedure is done as an outpatient procedure, so you will be discharged after resting and feeling comfortable enough to go home. You must bring a driver with you as you are not permitted to drive at this time. A shower is permitted the day following the procedure.

Results will be visible almost immediately after surgery, but the full effect may not be evident for four to six weeks after most of the swelling has subsided. Patients are very pleased with the results; in many cases the new body contour has a positive effect on self-image and self-esteem.
