HANDS DOWN: NEW COSMETIC PROCEDURE GIVES HANDS YOUTHFUL LOOK
Dr. Marlene J. Mash combines lasers, injectable fillers and her saline flush technique to restore aging hands to their former youthful appearance.
PLYMOUTH MEETING, PA Oct. 8-- While the human hand is critical for physically manipulating the environment, its 27 bones, muscles and tendons also serve another function. They, for better or worse, can reveal their owner’s age, often showcasing the tell-tale signs of aging that most people would rather cover up or wish would simply disappear.
For a number of years, Dermatologists have been treating aging hands with topical anti-aging preparations, lasers and even fillers—all of which have had varying results. Marlene J. Mash, M.D., a Plymouth Meeting, Pa. Dermatologist and Dermasurgeon, has pioneered a technique which combines IPL Laser resurfacing; the injectable filler called Radiesse and her own saline flush technique to plump up the hands, eliminate brown spots and reduce the size of large veins. The end result—smooth, full hands that give patients back their confidence and renewed sense of well being. She calls it “Total Hand Rejuvenation.”
Dr. Mash first uses the filler, Radiesse, which is made from Hyaluronic acid and is one of the longest-acting temporary fillers on the market, to fill in the areas of the hands that have lost their fullness and volume. Then, to reduce the bulging, unsightly veins, each is injected with her own Sclerotherapy saline flush technique. Using sodium tetradecyl sulfate in hypertonic solution, she injected the vessel, and then injects a sterile saline solution into the tissue surrounding the vein, which helps prevent ulceration and promotes faster healing. Completing the hand rejuvenation process, Dr. Mash uses the IPL laser to remove brown spots and wrinkles and restore the patients’ skin to a more youthful appearance.

“I developed the saline flush technique in 1998, and have performed more than 1000 procedures, many of which I used to remove veins from the legs,” Dr. Mash explains. “But, like our faces, our hands tell the story of our lives, and often times, unfortunately, show sun damage and the natural effects of the aging process. By combining the laser, vein reduction and Radiesse, I’ve been able to give my patients a new lease on life, if you will, and let their hands show expression and passion, not their real age”.
With the success of the hand rejuvenation procedure, Dr. Mash still recommends that her patients and the public in general, take basic sun protection precautions to protect their hands, face, and bodies during the year.
“People often believe that during the summer alone they need to use sunscreen. I tell my patients to protect their skin all year long with a broad spectrum sunscreen that blocks UVA and UVB rays, and has at least an SPF 15. They should also stay out of the sun, never use a tanning bed, and do monthly self-examinations to look for any skin abnormalities,” Mash added.
